You Can’t Make This Stuff Up November 19, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Daily Life, Thoughts, Utah , trackbackWhat I’m about to tell you is 100% true.
Honestly, I can’t make this stuff up.
Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?
A few weeks ago, we arrived in Utah. (Many of you are aware of the reputation Utah has for aggressive drivers, so this incident should not have been a complete surprise to me, but it was still . . .) I was out running some errands with Hannah and seriously, WHAM! BAM! NO THANK YOU MA’AM! We were rear-ended at a stop sign.
Go ahead and sigh with me. UGH!
It goes without saying that it is 100% inconvenient to be rear-ended. Especially when your husband is away! (David was already in North Carolina when this happened.) I drove my car to several shops to get quotes which was also totally inconvenient. (You know, I had to find babysitters to take the kids while I drove all over this blessed area to find a reasonable quote .)
I got a quote.
The lady that hit my car wanted to pay me cash instead of going through her insurance company because she didn’t want her rates to go up.
Fine.
That worked for me.
Then, our clutch went out. AS IN, DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR kind of clutch issue.
I took the car in ASAP to get the clutch fixed.
OK, my car was drivable again and I just needed to meet the lady at a bank to pick up my certified check.
No biggie.
I was driving on the freeway TO THE BANK TO PICK UP MY CERTIFIED CHECK FROM THE ACCIDENT and honestly, this is the part that is just too crazy that you must know, I’m not making it up . . .
A muffler came off of some car in front of me and it was bounding down the freeway headed straight toward my car. With three seconds notice and cruising at 70 MPH, it wasn’t possible to change lanes.
I kept praying, “Please don’t damage the undercarriage. Please don’t damage the body of the car. Please don’t let me drive over it and blow out a tire. Please don’t let me roll in this car. PLEASE DON’T LET ME DIE!”
Thankfully, none of the above happened.
But, it did hit my window at full force and just short of shattering it, it cracked the entire window.

Can I tell you how fortunate I am that it hit the passenger side of the window and not mine? Seriously, in that moment, I didn’t cry that my poor car was being picked on, or how much more money I would be putting out to fix the window. I drove away in shocked silence at how my life was protected, and at how quickly life can change.
Fortunately, the kids were not with me.
Fortunately, it just hit the glass and no body work needs to be done to the car.
How awesome is it that this happened when I was on my way to pick up a check for damage that was done to my car by someone else?
Awesome.
It was fixed today.
Some company came over to the house and fixed it right here.
I offered the installer some cookies. I mean, I felt like I should offer him something from saving me the hassle of dropping off my car, finding a babysitter, and getting a rental car!
I’m praying that my life is full of un-eventfulness for a while.
Really.
I could use a break.

Man, that is crazy! I’m glad no one was hurt!
I can’t believe that. What a nightmare!! I am glad too that you are all ok and it’s behind you. What a hassle.
If you substitute “aggressive” with “totally inattentive” drivers, then yeah, that’s my opinion. I’ve never been hit so many times, always someone else’s fault, as the nine years I lived there.
Oh! My!! Goodness!!! I’m glad you’re okay, even if your car is feeling a little worse for the wear. You should come back here; drivers here are MUCH safer. Oh wait, I got rear-ended here, too. Oh well. We miss you anyway!
Crazy! You’re right, you can’t make that up.
So, did anyone claim responsibility for the muffler, or was that out of your own pocket?
I hate car issues. And Utah drivers!
UGH! I had to pay for the window to be fixed! I have no idea which car the dang muffler fell off of!
The muffler must have been the scariest one. A large rock hit my window and it was SO loud. I cannot imagine the sound it made as the muffler hit the windshield!
So glad you are okay. If it is true that things happen in threes, then you’re good for a while, right?
