In Way Over My Head November 24, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Family, My Previous Life, Photography, Princess Hannah , 1 comment so farI have a handful formal dresses (I used them when I was Mrs. Dallas to MC fashion shows) and brand new wedding gowns (with tags still!) that I’ve listed on Craigslist. I had my neice, Jess, come over to my house and wear them to I could take some pictures.
Hannah thought this was a serious photo shoot . . . like, “magazine cover” worthy.

She wanted to be in every shot.
EVERY ONE.
When I had her scoot to the side so I could just photograph Jess in the dress, she got a bit ticked and said, “MOMMY! BUT NOW I’M NOT IN THE PICTURE!”
What the heck? How does a three year old know when she’s in the frame or not?
SERIOUSLY?

Many of the pictures are of Jess in a dress with Hannah clinging to her. (That should up the dress value, right?)

This is the little ham who wanted me to take her picture in the outfit she picked out.

Look at this pose.
Seriously, she is THREE, not a tween.
What have I gotten myself into?
Blah, Blah, Blah. November 23, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Family, Holidays, My Handsome Husband, Photography, Princess Hannah, Thoughts, Utah , 4commentsI’ve been feeling rather blah lately.
It could be because I’m up to my eyeballs in my Photoshop class and it’s sucking every last drop of creative juice out of my body.
It could be my temporary role as “single parent” that is just doing me in as well.
It could also be that part of my heart is on the other side of the continent. What am I supposed to write about when my life feels so incomplete? So alone? So not the same?
I’ve been missing my husband who has been in North Carolina for the last few weeks.
UGH. I really hate being apart. Now don’t worry, I’m not going to get all sappy on you . . . I do not enjoy reading posts when women proclaim their undying love for their spouse. It’s like, TELL THEM NOT ME! Most of the time it’s just TOO MUCH INFORMATION and I feel like a peeping Tom eavesdropping on a private love conversation. There is a 100% chance I don’t feel the same way about your spouse (which is a good thing!) and it just grosses me out.
Phew. It felt good to get that off my chest.
Just know that I miss my man.
A lot.
He is the reason I started this blog.
Ahem. It’s more like, he set this blog up for me and said, “WRITE WOMAN!” (Maybe it was his secret attempt to get me to talk other people’s ears off instead of his so he could spend more time studying . . . OK, that’s probably not his motivation but you know . . .)
He also encouraged me (read: enrolled me at AAU) to pursue my passion for photography.
He solves my technical problems, re-installs my computer programs, and he calmly suggests logical answers to my “I think I’m going to die!” problems. Why is it that last week I was rear-ended, our clutch went out, a loose muffler hit my windshield at 70 mph, and my desktop computer contracted some virus that overtook my entire hard drive all within a few days?
UGH. It was so inconvenient to take care of these things. This is totally a “David” thing to take care issues like this. I’m the CEO of the inside of the house (decorating, grocery shopping, buying clothes, and deciding where every piece of furniture is set and where every frame is hung) and he is the CEO of the outside and electronics which obviously includes car and computer issues.
So, what I’m saying is . . .
I can’t think straight and I’m sad that he doesn’t get to see our cute little kids.
The only benefit of David being gone is that I get 100% of the kid snuggles.
Yep. That’s about the only benefit.
On the flip side, I am on on full time Dallin diaper duty (which is a challenge at every change because the busy boy literally needs to be pinned down!) and I get to listen to Hannah ask, “WHY?” 846 times a day and I get to think of obscure answers. (Trust me, the kid doesn’t take “I don’t know” for an answer.)
I am on the countdown for his return at the end of this week. The Webcam will just have to do for a few more days.
When he returns, my groove will be back and I’ll be posting lots of adventures from Utah.

I have lots of fun Christmas activities planned to do as a family and, of course, lots of pictures to take.
Waiting to get my groove back . . .
Oops! I Missed One! November 22, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Friends, Photography , 3commentsI’m not sure how I missed these images the first time I sorted through them . . .

These images were taken just seconds apart, and they almost look identical . . .

Can you tell the difference? Which one do you like better?
My Gorgeous Friend Gave Birth November 20, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Daily Life, Friends, My Previous Life, Texas, Thoughts, Utah , 1 comment so farThis is my good friend Sheri who is so obviously GORGEOUS.
She even looks good 12 hours after popping out a baby.

We first met in Dallas when David and I had our bridal store and she was just a young 17 year old who did runway shows for our store. We then hired her to sell wedding gowns. Sheri and I have had many fun and crazy adventures together modeling at Dallas Market Hall (which mostly included both of us running late and applying our make up as fast as possible in our small dressing room before our first Vera Wang clothing call). We modeled formal wear together a few times for some Texas news stations and did other print work. Needless to say, we have had a lot of fun together. Our lives have been so interwoven over the last seven years, she’s practically family.

We must have been in favor with the Universe because we both currently live in Utah right now. We always get together whenever we have a chance (either in Texas or Utah, or anywhere in between) and I was so happy to see her and meet her new little guy.

He smelled so good . . . I could just sniff a newborn head all day long.

From time to time, I know I complain about picking up my life, and moving cross country for the 500th time . . . but it’s because of these moves that I meet so many wonderful people.
Congratulations Sheri!
You Can’t Make This Stuff Up November 19, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Daily Life, Thoughts, Utah , 7commentsWhat I’m about to tell you is 100% true.
Honestly, I can’t make this stuff up.
Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?
A few weeks ago, we arrived in Utah. (Many of you are aware of the reputation Utah has for aggressive drivers, so this incident should not have been a complete surprise to me, but it was still . . .) I was out running some errands with Hannah and seriously, WHAM! BAM! NO THANK YOU MA’AM! We were rear-ended at a stop sign.
Go ahead and sigh with me. UGH!
It goes without saying that it is 100% inconvenient to be rear-ended. Especially when your husband is away! (David was already in North Carolina when this happened.) I drove my car to several shops to get quotes which was also totally inconvenient. (You know, I had to find babysitters to take the kids while I drove all over this blessed area to find a reasonable quote .)
I got a quote.
The lady that hit my car wanted to pay me cash instead of going through her insurance company because she didn’t want her rates to go up.
Fine.
That worked for me.
Then, our clutch went out. AS IN, DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR kind of clutch issue.
I took the car in ASAP to get the clutch fixed.
OK, my car was drivable again and I just needed to meet the lady at a bank to pick up my certified check.
No biggie.
I was driving on the freeway TO THE BANK TO PICK UP MY CERTIFIED CHECK FROM THE ACCIDENT and honestly, this is the part that is just too crazy that you must know, I’m not making it up . . .
A muffler came off of some car in front of me and it was bounding down the freeway headed straight toward my car. With three seconds notice and cruising at 70 MPH, it wasn’t possible to change lanes.
I kept praying, “Please don’t damage the undercarriage. Please don’t damage the body of the car. Please don’t let me drive over it and blow out a tire. Please don’t let me roll in this car. PLEASE DON’T LET ME DIE!”
Thankfully, none of the above happened.
But, it did hit my window at full force and just short of shattering it, it cracked the entire window.

Can I tell you how fortunate I am that it hit the passenger side of the window and not mine? Seriously, in that moment, I didn’t cry that my poor car was being picked on, or how much more money I would be putting out to fix the window. I drove away in shocked silence at how my life was protected, and at how quickly life can change.
Fortunately, the kids were not with me.
Fortunately, it just hit the glass and no body work needs to be done to the car.
How awesome is it that this happened when I was on my way to pick up a check for damage that was done to my car by someone else?
Awesome.
It was fixed today.
Some company came over to the house and fixed it right here.
I offered the installer some cookies. I mean, I felt like I should offer him something from saving me the hassle of dropping off my car, finding a babysitter, and getting a rental car!
I’m praying that my life is full of un-eventfulness for a while.
Really.
I could use a break.
Salt Lake Temple After Hours November 16, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Church, Photography, Utah , 2commentsThis is the Salt Lake Temple.
It took 40 years to build back in the 1800’s. It is so beautiful and large.

It sits right in the heart of downtown. In fact, every address in Salt Lake is based off the temple’s location. For example, if you find yourself at 600 West and 400 South, you are exactly six blocks west of the Salt Lake Temple and four blocks south.
Cool huh?
I’ll take pictures of this temple during daylight hours sometime, but for now, just know that it is super beautiful.

There are six spires on the temple, (only three can be seen from this angle) and one day I’ll actually get a photograph of the temple from a bird’s eye view.
One day. (Along with all the other things I plan to photograph in Utah while we’re here.)
Jess November 13, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Family, Photography, Utah , 3commentsThis is my oldest niece, Jess. She is almost 21 and attends BYU.

I can’t believe she’s that old.
I can’t believe I’m old enough to have a niece that old.
I can’t believe her MOTHER is old enough to have a 21 year old! (Jenn, are you reading this?!)
Isn’t she beautiful?

We had a fun time together. She even did every dumb thing I asked of her.
Like this for example:

I’m 100% positive I wouldn’t do this for my aunt.
Well Traveled November 12, 2009
Posted by Emily in : My Former Dog Children, Trips , 3commentsDear Paris,
Just for the record, you are one spunky old lady.
Nine years ago, you entered this world with zest.
Nine years later, you’re still running, jumping, and stealing everyone’s food.

You’re quite well traveled for a dog. (Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wyoming, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Indiana, The Four Corners, and The Caribbean, just in the last few years.) In fact, if I didn’t know better, I would think you belonged to some spoiled kids that traveled anywhere and everywhere on a whim. (But we know the truth . . . medical school did this to us.)
Everywhere we take you, heads turn and people ask lots of questions. If it weren’t for you and Hannah and Dallin, I wouldn’t have any “conversations starters.”
Guess what?
The next adventure (meaning our next major move before our final major move in June) is in a few months.
We’re going to take you to all 50 states before you know it.
