Gloves That Make Me Squeamish October 12, 2009

Posted by Emily in : Medical School, My Handsome Husband, Photography, School , 2comments

The house is too quiet.

David is in Atlanta, taking the clinical skills (CS) part of the USMLE Step 2 exam.

Confusing, right?

That’s what I think.  Too many tests.  So much travel.

CS, as the name implies, tests his clinical skills.

I decided to help him prepare.  (By prepare, I mean I asked him to model for me for one of MY assignments.)

I figured if he could put on his gloves, he’d pass for sure.  What more does he need to know for this test?  How to speak English?  Medical stuff or something?

Wish him luck!

Check It Out! October 9, 2009

Today I’m having a garage sale.

I hope this garage sale works (as in, you know, people buying our stuff).

So far, I’ve mostly been chatting with my neighbors (who I’m going to miss terribly!) and freezing my buns off in this 50 degree weather!

Instead of boring you with all the details of packing, moving, cleaning, selling, and organizing, why don’t you check out my new photography website?  :)   www.emilylesher.com

Every so often, I check it out.

Just for fun.

Because I can.

In case you haven’t heard, I’m very excited about it.  :)

She Said What?! October 8, 2009

Overhead from our sassy little three year old during the last month:

Mommy, you have beautiful lips!

It has letters on it, I LOVE letters! (Explaining why she loves to use my Aveda Shammy)

I didn’t want to fall in the water because I didn’t have my bathing suit on! (Explaining the most scary reason why she shouldn’t fall off the pier; a 15 foot drop into freezing, cold, yucky, Lake Ontario.)

Don’t worry mom, the couch will hold my hand. (Jumping from cushion to cushion on the couch I offered her my hand.)

Dallin!  I love you to pieces little buddy!

Daddy, I love you SOOOO MUCH!  I want to keep you forever and ever and ever!

I’m growin’ up so big everyday. My mommy tells me that all the time. (She told this to the man at the candy store every time she saw him.)

I just want to get big enough so I can do tricks on the trampoline. (Really, this is the only reason she wants to grow up.)

Dallin!  Are you listening to me?  ANSWER ME!  (Dallin only knows five words, “hi, ah oh, boy, no, and dad.”) (Putting her hands on Dallin’s face, forcing him to look her in the eyes.  She means business when she wants a straight answer!)

Mommy, I was just looking out the window.  All those people need to go to sleep!  The sun has gone to bed!  You should tell them! (This was her explanation after looking out her bedroom window in New York  a couple hours after her bedtime.)

Are we not taking the camera?  (No honey, we’re going to Walmart)  Do we not take our camera to Walmart?

I’m just a little kid, and little kids just make a mess!

Mommy!  Daddy said I’m a drama queen!  I’m not a drama Queen! (She then threw her body on the floor.)

Grandma and Grandpa are going to be so happy to see me!  They are going to say, “I love you soooo much!”  We missed you soooo much!” And then they are going to give me too many kisses on my face. (Her response after we told her we were moving back to Utah.)

MY PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE IS LIVE!

Ahem.

My photography website is live.  :)

I first thought about making an official photography website this summer while I was taking classes at the Academy of Art.  After spending hours shopping around for the right website company that would not only represent my style, but figure out all the HTML mumbo jumbo for me, I chose to work with BluDomain.  They have fantastic templates, that allowed me all the creative control.  This website represents hours behind the lens, hours in post production, and hours creating the site!

I’m obviously super excited about the launch of my new website, and it would make me feel a teeny, tiny, bit justified in procrastinating packing (and other tedious things that go along with moving)  if you checked it out!

I Want a Scooter for Christmas October 6, 2009

Instead of packing, I’m spending time with my kids enjoying the beautiful fall weather.  Today we went to Deanna Rose Farmstead and the volunteer at the entry gate looked a whole lot like Santa Clause in overalls and a cowboy hat.

Hannah is a believer, and she knew that man must be Santa dressed as a cowboy.  So, she asked him, “Are you Santa?

You know what?  The man smiled, opened his wallet, and gave her a picture of himself dressed as Santa.  (Santa obviously hangs out in Kansas City during the off season.)

She looked at him, looked at the picture, and then looked at me.   (This earned me the mother-of-the-year award in her mind, putting her face to face with the man that just hands out gifts.) She then very confidently told him, “I want a scooter for Christmas.”

He told her he’d put it on his list.

You know what I’m shopping for on Black Friday this year.

It Never Hurts to Ask October 5, 2009

Hours before we left New York, one of my secret readers (aka lurker) decided to comment telling me that her parents were serving a mission in Palmyra.

She wanted to know if I could take a picture of them.

You know what?  It never hurts to ask!  Two phone calls and 30 minutes later, I met and photographed them.

Then, I got a crazy idea.  I almost didn’t ask because it is so crazy.

But . . .

It never hurts to ask, right?

I asked this girl’s parents if they had access to the roof of the Historic Book of Mormon Print Shop.  I wanted to take a picture of the four large churches on the corner from a high vantage point.

They asked someone, who asked someone, who allowed permission and gave detailed instructions on how to get up on the roof and what to expect when up there.

After climbing the fire escape, walking from one rooftop to another, (praying I wouldn’t fall through the roofs!), and shimmying my way up to the pitch of my building, I took one deep breath (mostly so I wouldn’t freak out and fall off the building) and held it so the camera wouldn’t have any camera shake.  (I was told my tripod could not make the trip to the roof and after getting to the top, I agreed.)

This is what the four churches look like from the roof of my building.  It was worth the adventure on the roof for this image.  :)

_dsc7412-edited-1

I really, really, really tried not to look down, but I did.

After my rooftop adventure, I got down and photographed the churches up close.

This is the Presbyterian Church

_dsc7392-edited-1

I think this one is Catholic . . . but please don’t quote me on that.

_dsc7395-edited-1

I have no idea which denomination this church is.  I can tell you it’s not the Methodist or Presbyterian.  Does that help any?

_dsc7397-edited-1

All of these churches are so old.  The newest one was renovated in 1850.  Most of these were built in the 1700′s.

_dsc7350-edited-1

This last picture is just for fun.  I had a great time shooting buildings during my last few hours in New York, and the Phelps General Store was one of them.

Apparently, this building is haunted.

I did not go inside.  :)

My Big Dream October 2, 2009

On our last day in New York, we drove out to the Finger Lakes area.  We followed our noses until we hit the town of Canandaigua.  We stopped to check out some boats on the lake and this is what we found:

_dsc7380-edited-1

A car repair shop among  several boat houses.

_dsc7356-edited-1

I mean, these were literal houses for boats.

_dsc7378-edited-1

Of course, we thought they were so cute and David started formulating a plan of how and why we might need/have one of these one day.

_dsc7357-edited-1

One day, we might actually own some things.

Actually, I’m just hoping to be out of medical school one day.  It’s not asking for too much is it?

When God Closes One Door October 1, 2009

When God closes one door . . .

_dsc7348-edited-1

He opens another.

After much fasting, prayer, and pleading with the Lord, God has provided us a way to stay together as a family through this messy rotation thing.

Really, that was all we wanted.  We just wanted to stay together as a family.

Turns out, we will be able to spend the majority of the next seven months together.  We will also be surrounded by lots of family in Utah which is a rare treat for us.

It puts a smile on my face to sit back and watch the Lord move mountains.

He really does know each of us.

He really does care about each of us and our desires.  Regardless of how silly or small they may be.
