Why Kids Cry . . . Explained September 4, 2009

Hannah recently discovered that her bed, in fact, does not have an invisible fence around it waiting to shock her if she even thinks about getting off it without permission.

It was a sad, sad, day that was a long time coming.

With this new discovery has come freedom.  Freedom to actually get up off her bed, open her door, walk to our room at the crack of dawn and ask, “Hey, are you guys still sleeping?”

Every day this week, Hannah has gotten  up around 6:00 AM.

I don’t gain consciousness until at least 7:00 AM (that sweet little Dallin understands my beauty rest needs;  he sleeps until almost 8:00 every morning.  Thank goodness!) so you can just imagine how lovely I am in the wee hours of the morning when Hannah announces that nature’s calling.

While sitting on the potty, Hannah talks a lot. (Actually, Hannah talks a lot regardless of where she is) I’m usually in a sleep trance sitting on the edge of the tub, with my head in my hands, pretending I’m in a dream while I wait for her to finish her business.   I usually don’t say a thing while I sit there, wishing I was still in bed.  This bothers her, and she always says in her outside voice, “Mommy!  Talk REG-LEE-ER!”

This demand is always followed with me saying in a firm whisper, “SHUSH!  Hannah!  You’re talking too loud!  You need to be quiet so you don’t wake up Dallin!”

Normally, she’ll start to whisper or just be quiet.  However, today, she got offended and started to cry.  This was our conversation through her sobs:

“Hannah, why are you crying!?”

“Well . . . kids just do that!  And you can’t tell them to not talk because then they just want to cry!  I don’t want to cry!”

Now you know why kids cry . . . because they’re not allowed to talk!
