Little Friends July 18, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Friends, Little Man Dallin , add a commentThis is Darby.

She is Dallin’s age and his new friend.

This is Dallin.

Dallin and Darby bonded while clinging to dear life in a small pool.
They’re buddies now.
Just like I’m buddies with Darby’s mom.

Don’t you just love friends?
Today Marks Twelve Years July 17, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Memory Lane , 6commentsToday is our 12th wedding anniversary.

We look so young.

My nieces look so young. (Betsy is the is standing on the top left.)

Our parents, well, they look the same.

Today, as I reflect on twelve amazing, challenging, fun, happy, adventurous married years to my very handsome husband, I only have two regrets:
- Not having kids sooner
- Not hiring a decent wedding photographer!
Sometimes, He Has Stuff to Say Too July 16, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Daily Life, Medical School, My Handsome Husband, Parenthood, Thoughts , 4commentsI’m a talker.
David’s a talker.
Together, we’re a chatty couple.
Most of the time, when David calls me on his way home from work, I start to data dump. (I rarely meet my daily word quota before he comes home, lucky for him!)
A few days ago, I was sharing the woes of my day. (The laundry! The dishes! Hannah’s not listening! Busy man Dallin is into everything! I’m exhausted!) Really, really, big woes I tell you.
After listening to me rant for 30 minutes straight, I asked him about his day.

He was coming home from a children’s hospital.
The surgeon he works with is a transplant surgeon. They were harvesting organs from a five year old boy.
In that moment, I realized that I had no woes.
Not one.
And for once, he needed me to listen to him more than I needed to talk.
Living in the Heartland July 15, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Kansas , add a commentFirst, I’m going to point out the blaringly obvious.
I live in Kansas. The heartland of the USA.

Home to America’s farmers, Dorothy, and many tornadoes.
I live smack dab in the middle of the country.
I am equidistant to all oceans, New York and Los Angeles, and Mexico and Canada.

My town is very family oriented. It boasts having over 60 miles of walking trails, (in lush green space) free Botanical Gardens, free petting zoos, and lots of sports arenas. The city is somewhat artsy as well. Sculptures are everywhere. Going to Costco? Say hello to the life size vases out on the corner in the middle of an empty lot. Driving down Blue Valley Parkway? You’ll see a huge blue abstract sculpture in the middle of the intersection. Going to the bank? Say hello to the bronze giraffes as you drive into the parking lot.
This is what happens when farm land and suburbia collide:

We, suburbians, admire tractors on display.
Needing a Head Shot For All Those Agents Busting Down Our Door July 14, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Daily Life, Family, My Handsome Husband, Photography, Princess Hannah , 3commentsDavid needed me to take a head shot of him for his residency applications.
A head shot.
Nothing special.
Just a basic passport photo really.
With my newly learned skills, I took two seconds out of my day to produce this very basic head shot.
I think it will do the trick.

My three year old assistant (she carries my bag, asks lots of questions, touches things she’s not supposed to, always want to get in the picture, wants to take the picture, etc) didn’t want to be left out.
She asked me to take her head shot.
Apparently, she needs to have one handy.
For all those agents or something.
Or maybe just a head shot to pass out to her friends, or anyone she see for that matter because if she sees you, you are automatically her friend.

What a doll.
Messy hair and all.
A mighty fine assistant if I do say so myself.
When I See This Happening . . . July 13, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Family, Little Man Dallin, My Handsome Husband, Parenthood, Thoughts , 4commentsThese images are dangerous for me.
Very dangerous.
I am talking a little break from pregnancy, birthing babies, and sleepless nights.

It does not help my cause when I look out my kitchen window and see this happening:

I’m a sucker.
A sucker for my husband.
A sucker for babies.
A sucker for cute puppies too.

I am the weakest link.
I think my husband is trying to persuade me to think about #3 a little sooner than later.
Ugh. Pregnancy. No thanks.
Cute little fat cheeks and scrunchy noses? SIGN ME UP!
Texan at Heart July 10, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Kansas, Texas, Trips , 8commentsI love Texas.
LOVE IT.
I am a Texan at heart. Should have been born and raised there.
What’s so great about the “Great State of Texas?”
The people. The shopping. The history. The pride.
When you visit the Dallas/Fort Worth area, you MUST, MUST, MUST go shopping at Sam Moon. If you don’t, your visit doesn’t count. You don’t know the thrill of shopping for fashion at bargain prices until you enter these doors.

Don’t let the lack of cars fool you about this parking lot. I shot this at night (with no flash thanks to my new skills from my classes) around 10:00 PM WAY after the store had closed. Trust me, the place is busting with shoppers from open until close everyday. The parking lot is jam packed. At Christmas time, they offer a shuttle to get you to and from your car because you probably had to park three miles away.

You must visit the historic Stockyards in Fort Worth. They still have cattle drives down the main cobblestone road twice a day.

This place is full of rich heritage. (Literally and figuratively.)

The Texas flag is ubiquitous. Everywhere you turn, there it us.

As is the “Lone Star”

And the American flag.
But this next image?
Unacceptable.

Texas traffic jams are bad.
VERY BAD.
In fact, you know it’s bad when you can hop out of your car, open the trunk, grab the camera, and leisurely walk to the grass to TAKE A PICTURE.
We were in the same spot on the freeway for 2.5 hours on our drive home to Kansas. Some major accident up ahead clogged the freeway northbound.
I was sure glad we had potty breaks before we left the house.
And lots of food in the car.
And good music to listen to.
And well slept babies.
But, even being held captive on the freeway for hours . . .
I STILL LOVE TEXAS!
One Year Later July 9, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Little Man Dallin , 3commentsDear Dallin,
You smell like strawberries and bubble gum. I try very hard not to eat you. You smell that good. Your soft cheeks don’t help either. Or the fact that you allow me to smooch your sweet smelling softness all day! Sadly, I know these sweet smelling days are numbered. In no time, you will begin to smell like “outside boy” and I guarantee I won’t be jumping to kiss the dirt off your face.
But, until then, you will be smothered with kisses from me.

Your first year in review:
Months 0-4: You screamed. A LOT. It’s all kind of a blur to tell you the truth. Your dad and I were both sleep deprived and emotionally drained. You were a cute little thing in so much pain. Somehow, we all survived your painful first four months and we ended up taking a family trip to Bear Lake . You briefly visited Idaho and Wyoming.
Months 5-6: You started doing planks daily. Started to crawl at 5.5 months. Your happiness increased 100% with mobility. You slept through the night for the first time and when I didn’t hear you for 11 hours . . . I thought you were dead. True story.
Month 7: We moved to Kansas City. You had your first plane ride. You visited Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri for the first time. You are an excellent sleeper. THANK GOODNESS. I am a much better mommy when everyone in the family is well rested.
Month 8: You started to stand and cruise around furniture. You love to torture Paris. In fact, Paris runs away when she sees you coming.
Month 9: You climb the stairs. You wrestle with Hannah. You got your first tooth. You got your first haircut.
Month 10: You speed crawl up the stairs. You stand. You love to inspect your toys. You got your second tooth.
Month 11: You love the grass. You love to watch other kids. You like to crawl on the sidewalk. You sprouted your top two teeth simultaneously.
Month 12: We drove to Texas to celebrate the 4th of July and your birthday with our friends Daniel and Lydia. You can now add Oklahoma and Texas to your travels. You love water. You mostly love to splash water.
In one year you went from this: (July 7, 2008)

To this:

July 7th 2009.
Happy Birthday Little Man!
Eating Cake . . . It’s Instinctive July 8, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Birthday, Little Man Dallin , 6commentsThis little man just turned one.

Judging by the look on his face, he doesn’t have a clue what to do here . . .

It just took one little hand print . . .

And then he seemed to know what to do.

His bossy little index finger sure had a great time.

And Hannah’s bossy fingers did too . . .

His face doesn’t have nearly enough icing on it yet . . .

But now it does. Eating birthday cake is really exhausting!

Happy birthday Dallin!
There is Much to Blog About July 7, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Birthday, Friends, Holidays, Little Man Dallin, Saba, Texas , 5commentsThere is much to blog about.
I have many pictures to post.
We had a wonderful time with our friends in Texas celebrating the 4th of July and Dallin’s birthday.
Now that we’re back, I need to catch up on some assignments (remember how I’m in school full time?) and upload some photos.
But for now, know that this delicious birthday cake got our birthday boy very, very messy.

And it made him so very happy.

And this delicious cake made the adults very happy.
