The Post Where I Reveal A Little Too Much April 17, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Asia, Daily Life, Kansas, Princess Hannah, Texas , trackbackNot all food tastes the same all over the world. Really. When I was in Taiwan, we ordered a combination pizza from Domino’s. (Which, by the way, is NEVER a good idea when in a foreign country) Sounds safe, right? It came with corn, shrimp, and broccoli on the top.
NOT KIDDING.
I’m a quick learner. I now know NOT to order American food in Asia because is just doesn’t taste right.
But . . .
Did you know that Doritos and Coke and all other beverages and chips taste slightly different too? Okay, the word slightly might not be a strong enough word.

I’m not a Coke drinker. I’m a Dr. Pepper girl. But, I’m pretty sure Dr. Pepper isn’t available in Asia because all I could find was Coke. Now I know Coke and D.P. are TOTALLY different, but I would order a Coke in lieu of my unavailable preferred drink.
Like I said, I’m not a Coke drinker, but I do know that Coke in the USA DOES NOT taste like Coke in China.
Please don’t argue and offend my discriminating taste buds.
Now, I have a concerning secret to share . . .
I still have an unopened Coke can from Taiwan from like four years ago.
This is weird. Tell me this is weird.
It’s unopened, and after all this time, the longer is goes unopened, the more I can’t bring myself to do it.

Now, I’m not sure what’s more concerning:
- That this Coke is older than Hannah
- That this Coke traveled all the way from Taiwan to Kansas by way of Texas
- That this Coke can sat in storage for three years
- That the mini-bar in the hotel I got this from charged me $5 for this one measly can
- That it’s still unopened
Pam? Do want this?

Well, if you’re weird, so am I.
My dad is quite the “punny” guy, and one day when my sister and I were fighting (we were teenagers), he went into the pantry, brought out a couple cans of hominy and gave them to us. I still have that can and have taken it everywhere with me, even displaying it in my college dorm room. It’s at least 12 years old, and I have no intention of ever opening it. At this point, I’m a little afraid to.
Soda tastes different in Egypt, too. I kept an Egyptian Sprite bottle in my classroom for years. The label was in Arabic and it kind of fascinated my students.
well I have to agree- I much prefer dr. P to ANYTHING if Im going to drink soda…
isnt it weird tho..the things that we end up carting around with us? I am suprised that it hasnt exploded in all the moves…:)
That is great~! I had some coke from the 2002 Utah Olympics- I finally got rid of it- tired of moving it around! It is kinda cool to keep it!
Although it’s tempting…i think I’ll pass:). The first time i went to the philippines (7 yrs ago) they didn’t even have diet coke
. but since, they have aquired coke light. i was seriously dreading going back because i knew the first 3-4 days i would be going through some serious withdrawls! anyway, totally tastes different cause it actually does have sugar in it. i think it has like 5 calories in it or something. but, im a little crazy with my d.c., i can tell if it has caffine in it and i know every mcdonalds within a 5 mile radius that has “good” diet coke. can you tell what i’m passionate about by my response! thanks for asking!!
Mexican coke is the BEST!!! They sell it at Costco. Seriously, try it–you’ll be hooked!
Caribbean coke was different too. South America coke is sweetened with sugar and the USA kind with corn syrup. Imagine my disappointment when I had that first Coke after coming back. This girl needs sugar!
