Kitchen Must-Haves April 9, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Daily Life, Favorites , trackbackI don’t spend that much time in the kitchen unless I’m baking something yummy, cleaning up a mess, or helping Hannah build a fort with my kitchen chairs.
All this time in the kitchen has made me think about what I absolutely could not live without in that room.
I need to share:
First, I love this cookbook, More-with-Less. (Although most of the recipes I use I get online here, I still love this cookbook.) My friend Bethany introduced this book to me while we were living on Saba.
Possibly the best recipe in this book is the pancake mix. You will never buy pancake mix again after tasting this one from scratch!
Combine in large bowl:
- 6 C. flour
- 1 T. salt
- 6 T. baking powder
- 6 T. sugar
- 2 C. powdered milk
Mix it well and store it in an airtight container.
To use:
Combine in a bowl:
- 1 egg
- 1 C. water
- 2 T. oil
- 1 1/2 C. pancake mix
Second, a bread maker is a MUST HAVE. I hate touching anything sticky or dirty, which makes kneading bread a huge problem. (as well as yard work because I can’t stand to touch the dirt) With a bread maker, all the dirty work is done for you! No touching sticky dough, no thinking, and no mess!
This machine was invented for someone like me.
It only makes one loaf at a time, but that is plenty for our little family.
Third, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, my double decker vegetable steamer.
You can steam rice, veges, fruit, fish, and meat!

Everything tastes better steamed.
Everything.
Fourth, I could not live without Clorox® Wipes. Possibly every surface in my house has been touched by one of these.
Your counter tops will smell clean and no longer like nasty mildew from wiping them down with the cold wet wash rag sitting in your sink.
YUCK.
Fifth, I love this cookie scoop.
Nothing says “I love you honey!” like perfectly shaped cookies that you didn’t have to touch. (See what I mean? It’s the whole “I don’t touch sticky/dirty things with my hands that drove me to this purchase!)

That pancake recipe looks great. We’ll have to try that soon. And the steamer looks wonderful, too. A friend and I recently made tamales, which you have to steam for 45 minutes after assembling. She had one of those steamers, and worked so well with the tamales that I’ve been thinking about getting one myself. It worked much better than my little metal steamer-in-a-pot that you have to keep refilling constantly.
We used to have a break maker when I was in high school, and somehow, I ruined all the loaves. How is that even possible?
You’re awesome Em.
Rebecca.
Hello Domestic diva!!! You’re a total crafter and cook! Your little girl is adorable- I tried that look- definetely wasn’t as cute on me
.
Does the yucky aversion include chicken. I still cringe every time I have to touch it. I had to laugh that you use your double decker steamer. We received one for our wedding and I could only ever make a mess.
I am an allrecipes fan too. Love ‘em. Super cute decorations in the previous post. I’m thinking maybe you should come decorate my kids’ rooms.
My kitchen would never, ever get clean if not for Clorox wipes. Did you know you can get them cheap at Costco? I have to use them because I can’t stand touching wet rags and sponges.
And I really want a bread maker. Maybe that’s what I’ll ask for on Mother’s Day. The idea of homemade bread sounds heavenly.
