How In the Heck Do You Say Your Son’s Name? April 3, 2009
Posted by Emily in : Church, Little Man Dallin , trackbackThere seems to be a world of confusion over something that is very straight-forward, at least to me. My son’s name has been the primary topic of many questions.
Let me just say this, we never intended his name to be so unique. So different. So unheard of by so many.
How do you say it? Dallin rhymes with TALON, like an eagle’s talon. It’s not Day-lon, or Dillon. Just plain old Dal-lin. Pronounce each short vowel and consonant, and there you have it.
Where did you come up with that? There is a great leader in our church named Dallin H. Oaks. He is one of the twelve apostles. David and I have always admired him. He is a great, wonderful, servant of the Lord. Many years ago, (while I was struggling with infertility) I was listening to a talk by this Apostle. I can’t remember what he was talking about, but I do remember this overwhelming feeling that one day I would have a son, and that I should name him Dallin. It was never a question what we would name our first son.
Does it mean something? It means, “from the dell,” which isn’t very exciting. And what is “the dell” exactly? How should I know . . . I’m from the city.
UPDATE: My friend Rebecca just sent me this link! Click here and then press the little speaker to hear his name outoud! Thanks Rebecca!

Are you serious that some people don’t know how to pronounce it?
I love the idea that you named him after Dallin H. Oaks.
I’m with Kelley. It’s pretty much said like it’s spelled.
Funny, I would have said Dallin, rhymes with Palin (as in Sarah)…..
Claire has an easy enough name. When I am speaking to people, every once in a while some random person will say “How do you spell it?” in our conversation. I always think “Why? What does that matter to what we were talking about?”
I mean, really……
OMGOODNESS!!
Totally post this link!! Clink on the little speaker icon after his name and it says it for you!! Out loud!!

By the way, I was trying to be funny with the Dallin and Palin thing. I realized that what I wrote sounds serious, and not joke making……
Rebecca thanks for the link! And I totally thought you were serious! I was thinking, “seriously? She’s one of the Day-lin prouncers?”
HE HE . . .
Nah. I never was but even if I had somehow managed to get it wrong, I’ve talked to you on the phone and heard his name right from you.
That is what you get when a Canadian tries to make jokes about American politics. Totally lame. LMAO.

That is hilarious. I never even thought that would be a hard name.
Thanks for the post about I totally get it. It spoke volumes to me as I am expecting #4. I wanted to tell you when I was there I just wasn’t quite far enough along yet. Now you get it.
