Hannah the Hula Dancer November 1, 2007

Posted by Emily in : Daily Life, Family, Princess Hannah , trackback

Halloween on Saba is a little more relaxed than it is in the States. We had a “Trunk or Treat” in the Medical School parking lot yesterday. Several of us decorated our trunks in hopes of adding to the Halloween spirit. Slowly, groups of kids were dropped off to Trick or Treat from our cars. I was waiting. Waiting for kids to RUSH over, to swarm around my trunk and beg for candy. Like NORMAL AMERICAN kids do. I waited, and waited and then, nothing. Really, nothing happened. The kids would get out of the car, and then talk to their friends. They socialized, laughed and stood around. Apparantly, not getting the idea of a “Trunk or Treat”. I was begging kids to come over and get some candy. Knowing full well that my obligation as a “Trunk or Treat” participant would not be over until ALL my candy was gone, and I was not staying ALL night!

Hannah had a great time. Mostly because there were people there and she loves people. Since Halloween is one of the hottest days of the year, she wore a climate appropriate costume: an itsy bitsy teeny weenie orange patterned bikini, with a grass skirt. She was an “island girl” from the “other” islands, half way around the world. As I lathered her up in sun screen (not to top off the costume, but for practical reasons), I thought how very different it was for me as a child when I got ready for Halloween. I certainly wasn’t lathered up in sunscreen, I was wrapped up like a “Mummy” to stay warm!

We had some Halloween music playing during the “Trunk or Treat”. Every time Hannah hears music, she dances. Anywhere. Anyplace. She shakes her bum, head and knees. The grass skirt added so much to her wonderful dancing, even she was intrigued by it! I will upload a video of Hannah dancing when I have a chance.

How sweet! It is great to see all of the “little ones” getting so big!

And how funny that in the corner of the first pic of Hannah, someone is going into class with long pants and a hoodie on!

Sending love

Rebecca.

I love how confused they all look in that last photo. You really have to upload a video of her shaking her bum because words can’t describe how cute she was.
